A Primer to Different Types of Diamonds

The mention of the word ‘diamond’ brings up an imagery of the precious gemstone that sparkles like a thousand stars. Did you know? This doesn’t apply to all kinds of diamonds. Yes, you heard it right–there are different types of diamonds that exist, with each having its unique properties.

Each diamond has four Cs or characteristics–colour, clarity, carat and cut, which determines how it will look. Plus, it’s also how these gemstones lend itself to jewellery pieces like rings, earrings, bracelets or necklaces.

Wondering what we are speaking about? This guide will help you identify different types of diamonds, so that shopping for them becomes much simpler!

How do we classify diamonds?

As mentioned above, diamonds are classified according to the following:

Cut: The cut of a diamond is defined by the number, exact shape and alignment of its facets; and therefore the cut also determines how well the diamond can perform.

Colour: The colour of a white diamond is graded on a scale from D-Z; D representing the colourless side of the scale, whereas Z marks the end point of the light yellow colour range.

Clarity: Natural diamonds are the result of carbon exposed to immense pressure and heat deep in the core of the earth. The formation process can result in a variety of internal characteristics called ‘inclusions’ and external characteristics called ‘blemishes’, which can be observed when the diamond is viewed with a 10X magnifying glass.

Carat weight: Carat (with a “C”) is a measure of the weight for precious stones. One carat equals 0.20 grams. When relating to the size of round diamonds, the dimension measured to establish a size to weight ratio is the diameter of the diamond.

There are also some physical and chemical attributes according to which diamonds are classified. This helps to determine the authenticity and treatment of the diamond.

Consumer way of classifying diamonds

For consumers, here are some ways of classifying different types of diamonds:

Natural diamonds: These diamonds are 99.95% carbon, making them colourless and sparkling. They have been shaped over time by the various forces of life and nature, making them sought-after for its rarity and exclusivity. Every natural diamond is unique, with its inclusions, imperfections and colour variations.

Treated diamonds: These are natural diamonds that have been enhanced through artificial means. Since external methods are used to make them as close to natural ones, they are more pocket-friendly.

Natural coloured diamonds: These diamonds can be found in a range of colours–from pink, yellow, blue, green, white and even black. Interestingly, these precious stones have a certain colour in accordance to the presence of different colours during their formation.

Man-made diamonds: As the name suggests, these diamonds are created in the lab using technology. Since these are produced in large quantities and aren’t exclusive, they are available at affordable prices.

Technical way of classifying diamonds

Wondering how diamonds are classified technically? Here’s all you should know about the different types of diamonds:

Type Ia diamonds: These have a yellowish tinge since nitrogen gathers in clusters in these stones. This is one of the most common types of diamond.

Type IIa diamonds: This has no presence of nitrogen impurities. Don’t be surprised because they come in various shapes, owing to the extreme pressure in the deep crevices of the earth. These are rare diamonds that sparkle bright.

Type Ib diamonds: Another type of unique diamonds with individual nitrogen atoms scattered throughout the stone. Due to this attribute, the diamond produces yellow, orange or brown colours.

Type IIb diamonds: This type of diamond has no nitrogen atoms but boron, besides carbon. How to identify them? They have a bluish or blue-grey hue.
