Gaye Holud Looks: Styling Jewellery For The Bengali Bride

Gaye Holud Looks: Styling Jewellery For The Bengali Bride

For a Bengali bride, the Gaye Holud (similar to the Haldi ceremony for north Indians) is one of the most integral ceremonies that happens in the morning on the day of the wedding. It begins at the groom’s house, where turmeric paste is mixed with milk, water and mustard oil. This is applied on the groom’s body by his mother and other female relatives or friends.

The remaining paste, along with the mustard oil, is then sent to the bride’s house along with the tatta, which includes the bride’s outfit to be worn during her Gaye Holud ceremony.

The ritual is then performed at the bride’s house in a similar fashion.

Of course, attire and jewellery are integral elements to create a showstopping look for the bride. That’s why it’s impossible to leave out certain bridal jewellery pieces that are specific to the Bengali bride.

While most of these are crafted from gold, some also have diamonds encrusted in them. At the end of the day, it’s your pick and what you believe suits your personality!

mukut

Mukut: The mukut is a part of Bengali bridal jewellery that signifies wealth and prosperity. It’s nothing short of a crown fit for a queen. Most Bengali brides wear mukuts made from shola  (a milky white spongy plant shaped into objects of art).

Ratanchoor: The Bengali bride also needs ornaments to adorn her hands. That’s where the ratanchoor comes into use. With a subtle and minimalistic design, it has several interlinked chains that connect the bracelet to finger rings.

Tikli: It resembles the maang tikka and rests on the bride’s forehead.

Bala: This is one of the most treasured pieces for a Bengali bride—a thick gold bangle encrusted with animal or floral motifs. After all, it has been passed down generations by the women of the family.

Necklaces

Necklaces: The Bengali bride has plenty of traditional necklace options to adorn herself with. One of the most significant is the Saat Noli Haar with seven tiers, with each necklace larger than the other but with a similar pendant. Chik is also a part of the ensemble for Gaye Holud. Made from gold, it generally has an adjustable fabric clasp to place it right on the neck.

Shankha Pola: A set of white and red bangles worn by married women in Bengal is one of the most striking pieces of jewellery for its bright combination. While the white bangles are made from conch shells, the red ones use corals–both being durable in the long run. Some of them are also encrusted with gold.

Nath: This one is another piece that adds
beauty to the Gaye Holud look. The nath or
the nose ornament is generally crafted from
pure gold and has a bead or pearl as its
centrepiece

For Gaye Holud, most Bengali brides wear a yellow saree or lehenga. Here’s a guide on how you can look your best on this special day:

A ray of sunshine : If you plan on channeling a contemporary chic look, a yellow ruffle saree with a lightly sequined golden blouse is the best bet. Rest, let the jewellery do the talking!

Tanishq tip: The Elegant Five Layer Beaded Necklace Set with intricate motives which is a rendition of the traditional die-work is a match made in heaven. It is also embellished with intricate filigree work, making it one-of-its-kind.

A (graceful) vision in yellow: Stepping out in a bright yellow lehenga on your Gaye Holud will make you a head-turner. You could also try a yellow Kanjeevaram saree for a rich look.

Tie your hair in a fishtail braid, wear shimmery golden heels and brush on some radiant makeup (without being too loud).

Tanishq tip: Finish the look with the Enduring Floral Motif Jhumka Earrings with fine Kolkata die work. The floral motifs add a touch of traditional elegance and at the same time, exude a contemporary aesthetic, making it a hit for an occasion like Gaye Holud.

A regal look: Are you someone who enjoys sticking to tradition? Choose a yellow tant saree with a red border, fit for the special occasion. Deck your hair with floral strings and look like a star! To elevate this ensemble, choose the Alluring Four Layer Necklace Set with a necklace and drop earrings, adorned with intricate Ahmedabadi-die work. Its rawa and mesh detailing and delicate floral motifs radiate opulence!

Pastel princess: You could also ditch yellow and go for pastel shades like pink or light green to stand out. Tie it into a loose bun and put an ornamental headpin to make a statement.
